Anyone who watches the show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, is familiar with the phrase “Driver, move that bus!”
Host Ty Pennington then reveals the brand new house that stands on the site of the family’s former dilapidated dwelling.
LSCC Children’s Ministry leaders are hoping to generate similar excitement, but it’s hearts – not buildings – that will experience transformation. Vacation Bible School is June 14-17 with theme “Extreme Makeover: Heart Edition.”
“Our goal is that children will see that God has designed every part of their lives for a very specific purpose,” said Kevin Hartman, Children’s Ministry director.
Much of this year’s theme, music and curriculum are entirely home grown. LSCC members Billy Mayor, Pam Hartman, Laurie Brower and Kari Schooley wrote the curriculum. Teri Curp wrote the theme song, and with the help of Dave Murray developed drama skits. LSCC also produced its own logo.
Schedule
The week is for children entering grades one through six this fall. Children will begin each day with music and drama, then proceed to small groups to discuss and apply the morning’s truths. Kids will also rotate through activity stations, including crafts, snacks, games, music and Bible stories. In keeping with the theme, one station will be called Home Improvement, based on the booklet My Heart Christ’s Home by Robert Boyd Munger. Children will close each day with music and a final word of encouragement.
LSCC does no paid advertising for Vacation Bible School. That means it’s up to us to spread the word to friends, family and neighbors. For some, the week will be their first time to hear the gospel message. For kids who have already put their faith in Christ, it’s a time to deepen that commitment.
To adults, a few hours may seem like a short period of time. But for children, it’s a prime opportunity to better understand God and his desire for a lifelong relationship with them.
“Anytime you hold on to kids for three hours and maintain the attention of their hearts, you can be sure God will show up and make a big difference in the lives of many,” said Patty McWilliams, who leads Vacation Bible School.
